Spring is Here

Patches should be ready, plants are in the ground in their cold frames. Soon we will be burying vines, spraying for diseases/pests and watching our fruits swell each day. What can we do now? Keep your seedlings warm with lights, black plastic ground covers, soil warming cables etc. Go easy on the fertilizer so you dont burn the delicate seedlings but make sure they have a good balanced source of N-P-K for good root and chute development. As they develope they will feed by root and stored energy in the two big leaves that break open the seed shell. Once a good root system is established they will absorb more nutrients and make thier own food and begin to grow leaves and vines. By that time the weather should be more consistently warm and dry and your plants will begin to grow feet per day as opposed to inches. This is also an important time to be proactive in preventing disease and pest problems. Apply your granular fungicides and insecticides so that the plants will begin to soak up the chemicals that are systemic. Its also important for organic growers to be applying their biologicals. Also keep in mind that Spring into early Summer is prime time for storms that will produce hail and wind and sometimes flooding rain. keep plants protected with cold frames as long as possible and use wind barriers around your patch. Location, location, location of your patch is all important in helping to avoid damage from a flooding rain. If you dont have room or options for a higher-well drained patch, drain tile, pumps, and barriers may be your only hope. Good luck!
